Purchasing an Elan

Here's a nice article from Independent Club Lotus on purchasing an Elan!

Here is an article from EVO magazine August 2001 about Elan buying tips.

Another point worth bringing up here is that more than a few Elans have developed a leak in the fuel tank. This is from a hairline crack at the junction of the filler neck into the tank unit.  This leak causes fuel to drip out onto the ground just under the tank which is in front of the left rear wheel. The drips will continue until the fuel level drops to just below the crack. Thus, if seriously considering the purchase of an Elan, the only way to test for this is to take the Elan to a fuel station and fill the fuel level up to the top.  Then wait at least 5 minutes and observe for this leak! Be careful as this is a fire-hazard!  The only true fix for this involves the replacement of the tank unit, which is best left to an authorized dealer.
